One of the great blogging ideas this blog has given me is to write my one freelance type. You once linked to a hillarious post about different freelance types, but, even though I recognised a few, none seemed to fit me.

So I wrote my own, this was in May 2008 or so - and then I chickened out and didn't publish it. I've been tempted to publish it many times since, but I keep blaming this that or the other and haven't gotten around to doing so. One of these days though, after I get that dream assignment perhaps;-)

It was great finally meeting you in June at Newsrewired. I know I promised to drop you an email but I managed to injure my back on the way home, which kept me in bed for a few weeks, and then my wallet, with all the cards from Newsrewired, was stolen. July was such a nasty month it almost beggers belief. Luckily August is proving to be a much better month than July, not that it takes much but August is pretty cool so far. Actually, having a good reason to cuddle up with some good books (July), wasn't so bad either, pity it took a back injury, stolen wallet and abused credit cards for me allow myself to do so;-)Kristinehttp://kristinelowe.blogs.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27479087.post-89837994103645139782010-06-16T13:15:38.711+01:002010-06-16T13:15:38.711+01:00We have started firing certain clients that in our...We have started firing certain clients that in our opinion not worth the money, these are clients that are not appreciative, penny pinch, call up daily for advice and consultation without any additional payment and late payers. If you spend more time on these clients than they pay it is costing you money this could be chasing payment, constant handholding or just sitting upset because they are rude. We tend to mark up our costs significantly for these clients so they are worth the money and we feel better about working with them or we just get rid.Joannehttp://www.seo-creative.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27479087.post-50590806418340068942010-05-12T11:09:07.624+01:002010-05-12T11:09:07.624+01:00Sadly, like your other commenters, I too hate my c...Sadly, like your other commenters, I too hate my clients, that's how I found you. I have a gmail account (one of a total of about a dozen addies I have for various purposes), and I use Google Reader for my RSS feed. I just dislike the idea of depending on one company to fulfil all my needs. It's not a fear that Google will go under, more about not wanting to be in their power.

I don't doubt the functionality of Google Docs but the big advantage of using Dropbox instead is that I can work in my own programs - whether that's Word, Open Office, Excel, Acrobat or whatever - and retrieve them in the same format. And I don't need to "convert" them from Google's own format.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09575696613288942467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27479087.post-44265178508217721812009-09-22T10:32:36.655+01:002009-09-22T10:32:36.655+01:00If there is one thing missing from this list (inte...If there is one thing missing from this list (intentionally, as you make clear, but still) it's Google Docs. I've been using it for several months now and I am very impressed with every bit of it. It was only late next day - home, hungover and swearing off alcohol for life - that I discovered I'd been the the talk of the night. As my OP says, the original fee was not an underpayment. I stated clearly that I thought it was reasonable. I never taken on underpaid work. The reason there was a difference in wordcount was because in between being offered the work and actually receiving it, the MS had gone back to the author as they wanted to add more text.

The desk ed was probably a little slack in not rechecking the wordcount before forwarding the MS but replied instantly to my request for more money for the extra work, which I think is fair. And yes, I'm being paid more now as the difference in fee is more than a fifth of the original, no doubt to make up for the inconvenience at my end.

I think everything has been handled fairly and professionally on both sides.

If you have further comments, Anon, please ID yourself or I won't be publishing them.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09575696613288942467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27479087.post-79158325094138823562009-07-31T08:41:22.896+01:002009-07-31T08:41:22.896+01:00So they underpay you and give you more work than a...So they underpay you and give you more work than agreed.
